1998 - Kenya and Tanzania
My 1997 trip to Kenya and Tanzania was another journey into the wilds of southern Africa, in search of 'big game' as well as the scenery of the African Rift Valley - in the company of Somak Tours
From Nairobi, we travelled by minibus to Lake Manyara National Park which is a sizeable depression containing a wholely enclosed ecosystem, with a number of 'specialised' animals such as 'Tree climbing' Lions. Lions don't normally climb trees, but in LMNP they have evolved this way. We also saw many colourful birds, antelopes and many other creatures big and small. From here we traveled onto The Masai Mara NP and Ngorogoro Crater NP - like LMNP each of these is a self contained ecosystem with specialised animals of all kinds. The Masia Mara is a wide open dry plain with some indigenous people (the Masai) who were very friendly and wore colourful costumes and jewelry Into the Ngorogoro Crater and you enter a whole new world of vast herds of wilerbeest, water buffalo and (of course) Lions and Elephants. Nairobi is a typical bustling African capital city - you need to be a bit savvy as everything seems to be done at 100 miles per hour (that includes the buses and taxis) - not quite as mad as Santiago in Chile!
