1995 - Borneo
In 1995, I did a trip to Borneo - a large island in South East Asia.
It comprises a number of smaller states, such as Brunei - an independent soverign country along with the other provences of Sabah, Sarawak and the 'wilder' southern area of Kalamantan. The trip I did was to fly to Kuching in Sabah, via Kuala Lumpur. Staying in Sabah for about 7 days to visit the Mulu Cave system and the Orangutan reserve at Sepilok and then another week exploring Kinabalu National park, including a full ascent to Lowes Peak, of Mount Kinbalu, at 14,450 feet the highest peak in SE Asia. The route through the Mulu caves was spectacular including Deer Cave, at 12 Km long, upto 2 Km wide and 0.5 Km high - one of the largest caves in the world. Sepilok is an area of natural forest reserved for re-habilitating Orangutans back into the wild - they are very inquisitive creatures and extremely friendly. The ascent of Mount Kinabalu is a tough 17Km trek from the Park Ranger Station at 6,500 ft climbing to 11,200 ft where there is a refuge with basic facilities and then the very early morning call for the final 3,300 ft of ascent over 5 Km - most of which requires the use of ropes - definitely not a jourmey for the unfit!!!
